Alesse product description

Drug uses

Besides a contraceptive effect, Alesse pills inhibit the secretion of gonadotropins and possess antiandrogenic activity. Due to these effects, Alesse reduces the sebum secretion, thus helping to prevent acne.

The drug is recommended to female adolescents aged 16 and older and to women before postmenopause. Alesse can sometimes be used as a drug for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in female adolescents aged 14 and older, having menarche.

For a reliable contraception and an effective acne control, the patients should comply with the dosing regimen of Alesse, indicated into the package insert and on the packaging.

Missed dose

The patients should avoid missing doses to achieve a stable contraceptive effect. If the delay in the drug intake does not exceed 12 hours, the contraceptive protection is not reduced, and the missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. The next Alesse dose should be taken at the usual time. If more than 12 hours pass after the last Alesse dose, the contraceptive effect of the drug is reduced, and additional measures may be required to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

More information

The dosing regimen of Alesse, required for acne treatment, coincides with the one, used for the protection from unwanted pregnancy.

Clinical trials showed that clear or almost clear complexions and a reduction in the number of inflammatory lesions were detected in most women after 6 months of treatment with Alesse.

Each consequent Alesse package should be started after a 7-day break, during which withdrawal bleeding usually takes place.

The combined oral contraceptive Alesse should be stored in original packaging, at temperature not exceeding 30°C.

Alesse pills cause no serious adverse reactions in the majority of women, so they can be used for birth control for many years. Alesse birth control pills may cause in some women migraine headaches, intermenstrual spotting or bleeding, weight gain.

Less commonly, Alesse pills may increase the risk of thromboembolic events, abdominal pain, acne, dizziness, decreased libido, edema, mood changes, reversible breast enlargement, breast tenderness, gastrointestinal disorders, painful periods, urinary tract infections. As a rule, Alesse adverse events are mild to moderate, and do not require the immediate cessation of the hormonal birth control method.
