Avodart Product Description

Drug Uses

Avodart is a drug for the symptomatic treatment and the long-term prophylaxis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men over 18. To relieve BPH-associated moderate to severe symptoms, Avodart can be used in combination with medicines of the group of alpha blockers (including Doxazosin, Tamsulosin, Terazosin, and Prazosin).

Avodart relieves BPH symptoms very quickly, however to evaluate objectively the treatment efficiency, Avodart capsules are recommended to be taken daily for 6 months. Symptomatic treatment of BPH is considered to be successful when its monotherapy or combination of Avodart and alpha blocker helps:

• to improve urinary flow
• to prevent acute urinary retention
• to relieve symptoms of urinary obstruction
• to achieve long-term reduction in prostate volume
• to reduce the probability of BPH progression
• to reduce the need for surgery

Missed dose

Try never forget to take meds on time, however if you reveal that you have missed an Avodart dose on the same day, take immediately one capsule of Avodart. If you forget to take Avodart and have remembered about the missed dose on the next day, do not double the dose of Avodart and return to the prescribed dosage regimen (one-day dosing of Avodart).

More Information

Avodart is recommended for combination therapy of BPH when monotherapy does not provide significant relief of BPH symptoms and signs, or surgical treatment options for BPH are contraindicated, or the surgical procedure is not an option for a patient.

Storage

Avodart capsules should be stored at temperature not above 30°C, in a dry warm place, out of children's reach. Any deformed or discolored Avodart capsules should be discarded.

Warnings

Avodart capsules contain an active ingredient known as Dutasteride, which may cause irreversible toxic damage during the growth and development of male fetus. In addition, Dutasteride pills are readily absorbed through the skin. Since Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and cause potential risks to the fetus, any contact with intact, damaged or deformed capsules of Avodart should be avoided by sexually active women of reproductive age.

Avodart Side Effects

Avodart capsules may cause adverse events very rare. When using Avodart for long-term BPH therapy for over 1 year, adverse events are reported in less than 1% of men. Like other oral medicines of strong androgenic activity, Avodart can affect a man's sexual function. The results of drug investigations demonstrated that Avodart intake is ceased in less than 1% of men due to erectile dysfunction.

Other rare adverse events of Avodart may include: changes in libido, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, or increase in the size of breast tissue. Ejaculation disorders are observed more often when Avodart is used in combination with an alpha blocker comparing to its monotherapy of BPH. In addition, hypotension may occur in men using both Avodart and an alpha blocker. This adverse event appears because of antihypertensive activity of alpha blockers.
