  • Product overview

Biltricide - Biltricide is an anthelmintic (an-thel-MIN-tik) or anti-worm medication. It prevents newly hatched insect larvae (worms) from growing or multiplying in your body.

Biltricide is used to treat infections caused by Schistosoma worms, which enter the body through skin that has come into contact with contaminated water. Schistosoma worms are found in Africa, South America, Middle Eastern countries, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia.

Biltricide is also used to treat infection with liver flukes, caused by a type of worm found in East Asia. This worm enters the body while eating contaminated fish.

Biltricide should not be used to treat parasitic infections in the eye.

Biltricide may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Used for: Treating certain worm infections (eg, schistosoma, liver flukes).

Biltricide is an anthelmintic agent. It works by killing sensitive worms.

Biltricide is an anthelmintic used in most schistosome and many cestode infestations. Biltricide effects the permeability of the cell membrane resulting in the contraction of schistosomes. The drug further causes vacuolization and disintegration of the schistosome tegument. The effect is more marked on adult worms compared to young worms. An increased calcium influx may play an important role. Secondary effects are inhibition of glucose uptake, lowering of glycogen levels and stimulation of lactate release. The action of Biltricide is limited very specifically to trematodes and cestodes; nematodes (including filariae) are not affected.

Indication: For the treatment of infections due to all species of schistosoma.

Biltricide is used to treat parasitic and worm infections such as those caused by tapeworms.

Used for:

Biltricide is used to treat infections caused by parasites such as liver flukes (worms) or schistosoma (blood fluke). These infections are also known as snail fever, schistosomiasis, or bilharziasis. Biltricide may also be used for other worm infections as determined by your doctor. However, it will not work for pinworms or other roundworms.

Biltricide belongs to the family of medicines called anthelmintics. Anthelmintics are used in the treatment of worm infections. Biltricide works by causing severe spasms and paralysis of the worms' muscles. Some kinds of worms are then passed in the stool. However, you may not notice them since they are sometimes completely destroyed in the intestine.

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

Once a medicine has been approved for marketing for a certain use, experience may show that it is also useful for other medical problems. Although these uses are not included in the product labeling, Biltricide is used in certain patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Some kinds of fluke infections.
  • Some kinds of tapeworm infections.
