Important information

You should not take Zyban if you have seizures, an eating disorder, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or sedatives. If you take Wellbutrin for depression, do not also take Zyban to quit smoking.

Do not use bupropion if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

 

Zyban may cause seizures, especially in people with certain medical conditions or when using certain drugs. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and the drugs you use.

Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Zyban. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Zyban if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

You should not take Zyban if you are allergic to bupropion, or if you have:

  • epilepsy or a seizure disorder;

  • an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia; or

  • if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or a sedative (Valium, Nembutal, Seconal, Solfoton, and others).

Zyban may cause seizures, especially in people with certain medical conditions. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions.

Do not take bupropion to treat more than one condition at a time. If you take Wellbutrin for depression, do not also take Zyban to quit smoking.

To make sure Zyban is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • a history of head injury, seizures, or brain or spinal cord tumor;

  • narrow-angle glaucoma;

  • heart disease, high blood pressure, history of heart attack;

  • diabetes;

  • kidney or liver disease (especially cirrhosis); or

  • bipolar disorder (manic depression).

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Zyban will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine.

Major Side Effects

If any of the following side effects occur while taking bupropion, check with your doctor immediately:

More common:

  • Anxiety
  • dry mouth
  • hyperventilation
  • irregular heartbeats
  • irritability
  • restlessness
  • shaking
  • shortness of breath
  • trouble sleeping

Less common:

  • Buzzing or ringing in the ears
  • headache (severe)
  • skin rash, hives, or itching

Rare

  • Confusion
  • fainting
  • false beliefs that cannot be changed by facts
  • having extreme distrust of people
  • seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • trouble concentrating

Incidence not known:

  • Actions that are out of control
  • anger
  • assaulting others
  • attacking others
  • being aggressive
  • being impulsive
  • chest pain or discomfort
  • fast or pounding heartbeat
  • force
  • inability to sit still
  • need to keep moving
  • sweating
  • talking, feeling, or acting with excitement

Minor Side Effects

Some bupropion side effects may not need any medical attention. As your body gets used to the medicine these side effects may disappear. Your health care professional may be able to help you prevent or reduce these side effects, but do check with them if any of the following side effects continue, or if you are concerned about them:

More common:

  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • constipation
  • decrease in appetite
  • dizziness
  • increased sweating
  • trembling
  • weight loss (unusual)

Less common:

  • Blurred vision
  • change in sense of taste
  • drowsiness
  • frequent need to urinate
  • sore throat
  • unusual feeling of wellbeing
