Zyvox product description

Drug uses

Zyvox antibacterial drug is indicated to treat suspected or proven infections caused by susceptible strains aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms, including vancomycin resistant Enterococcus and Staphylococcus. The list of indications for Zyvox use includes several different types of bacterial infections, such as:

  • pneumococcus
  • VREF* infections
  • urinary tract infections
  • intra-abdominal infections
  • skin and soft tissue infections
  • pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus

*VREF - Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus Faecium.

Zyvox has no clinical activity against Gram-negative pathogens. In the established infection (or suspected infection) caused by concomitant Gram-negative microorganisms, a combined antibacterial therapy can be prescribed.

Zyvox antibacterial agent has activity against some Gram-positive anaerobic and aerobic bacteria, rapidly inhibits the growth and multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms, as well as has a pronounced anti-microbial effect. Zyvox antibiotic is recommended for adult patients, elderly and children from the first days of their lives.

  • The therapeutic dose of Zyvox for adults and teens over 12 years varies from 600mg up to 1,200 mg per day.
  • Pediatric dose of Zyvox (children from 1 week to 11 years old) is 10mg per 1 kg of child’s weight.
  • There is no need to adjust the therapeutic dose of Zyvox antibiotic in elderly patients aged 65 years and older.

Missed dose

If the patient forgot to take the prescribed dose of Zyvox, he or she should take the missed dose as soon as remembers. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one according to the dosing regimen.

More information

The mechanism of action of Zyvox differs from the mechanism of action of other classes of antibiotics, so cross-resistance between Zyvox and other antibiotics is absent or occurs very rarely.

Storage

Zyvox film-coated tablets should be stored at controlled room temperature between 15-30°C, in the tightly closed container or in the original blister packs to protect from moisture and light.

Zyvox warnings

During prolonged use of Zyvox, the growth of non-susceptible bacteria and reversible myelosuppression (including thrombocytopenia, anemia and leukopenia) may be observed in the patients. A special attention is required if unexplained acidosis develops or reduction of bicarbonate level is noted after the start of Zyvox use.

In prolonged use of Zyvox drug (over 28 days), some patients may observe optic neuropathy, which is manifested in a change of visual acuity, color perception, and blurred vision. In this case, consult an ophthalmologist.
